25th November, 2011
Dear Mr. President;
As President of the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation I am writing to formally express our extreme concern at the behaviour exhibited by the supporters during the Champions League Match of APOEL against Zenit held in St Petersburg on 24 November in which the supporters displayed a banner stating that ‘Cyprus is Greek and will remain so’ and proceeded to publicly burn the national flag of North Cyprus. Such incidents as this serve only to foment racial tension and ethnic animosity.
At a time when FIFA has reiterated its stance against racism in football, the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation request that according to FIFA statutes and regulations of Article 3, for these supporters be condemned in the strongest possible manner, the Club be punished accordingly and that FIFA and UEFA reappraise their stance regarding their lack of recognition of the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation.
In so doing this would actively demonstrate to the world at large that ethnic and religious hatred and divisions have no part in the game of football. The Cyprus problem is fuelled by the antagonism of some factions in South Cyprus to the ethnically and religiously separate community represented by the Turkish Cypriots. To support this divide is to be ruled by unacceptable prejudice.
I hope you will give attention to this matter, so that we will not be offended anymore because of Football.
Yours sincerely,
Hasan SERTOGLU
President
